Pilot Study in Connaught Place reveals presence of Heavy Metals in Air

In a pilot study carried out in Connaught Place, New Delhi to determine the amount of particulate matter and to clean up the air, it was found that heavy metals like thorium, uranium, lead and arsenic levels were very high.

The filtering station was installed outside Pallika Bazaar at the Inner Circle last month. In the 860 hours of monitoring that the machine did, 2.12 kg or 20 trillion airborne particles were trapped in its filters. Levels of PM 2.5 and PM 10 were found to be higher than the prescribed limit. When analyzed by the scientists heavy metals and chemically toxic elements were found in the dust. Other than metals, there were also several iron and lead compounds which are a threat to health. Presence of magnesium and potassium also indicate combustion activity.

The filtering machine was set up for a pilot project by Italian company system life in collaboration with NDMC.The machine has a filtering capacity of 10,000 to 15,000 cubic meters of air/hour. To clean CP's inner circle,4-5 such machines will be required.
